High Voltage Electrician

Duties and responsibilities of the High Voltage Electrician include but are not limited to:
Responsible for automated electronic and computer controlled industrial electrical distribution equipment and systems, industrial electrical generation equipment and systems, industrial fire alarm and controls equipment, lighting, Physical Security and Intrusion Detection systems to include(CCTV) cameras, card readers, and multiple door and motion sensor devices and various other equipment and systems. Maintains, takes all calls, and trouble shoots problems on automated high and low voltage electrical switchgears:
From 277/480 volt to 120/208 volts. Fault current up to 6,000 amps. This includes; the Micro processor controlled paralleling generator switchgears with voltages up to 480 volts AC, protective relaying devices, Automatic Transfer Switches high and Low Voltage Distribution systems, e industrial electrical emergency generator systems with associated switchgears, controls and batteries systems. Maintains, takes all calls, and trouble shoots problems on the Simplex fire alarm system which is a computer controlled, addressable system consisting of over 1,200 devices throughout the medical center. This is a primary Life Safety system. Maintains, takes all calls, and trouble shoots problems on Computer monitored and electronically controlled elevators, 6 on station, all traction technologies. These units are VFD Drive type elevators and require multi disciplinary knowledge to maintain. Responsible for maintaining the site lighting system. This system consists of computer controls with low voltage contactor switching and is interfaced with our energy management system. Underground fuel tanks and monitoring systems required by TJC and EPA. Provide and maintain all pathways, wiring, bus duct, underground man hole systems needed at this medical center for signal, power and communications throughout this medical center to include the outpatient clinics. Must often diagnose, troubleshoot and repair equipment using sophisticated and complex electronic test equipment including oscilloscopes, meters, etc., and often must work with very poor and general electric/electronic wiring diagrams and schematics requiring the incumbent to use in depth theoretical knowledge to correct deficiencies. This is due to the fact that much of the equipment and many of the systems are made up of non-off the shelf subassemblies or subsystems, made uniquely to work in one application only. The unique design aspects of industrial electronic controls require the use of non-standard practices to facilitate repairs. This often requires the incumbent to determine the need for modifications to the equipment or system and requires design, building, implementing and testing of electronic, electrical and/or electromechanical changes, after administrative approval from the engineering technician. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
He/she is expected to be able to do a considerable amount of walking, standing, stooping,bending and crawling. Must be able to work off ladders in congested areas, where he/she is expected to work overhead in tight cramped or awkward positions. Must be able to work under and inside of a variety of equipment. He/she must be able to lift at least 45 lbs. and be able to carry for some distance up and down stairs. Since much of the work is done in patient care buildings the incumbent must be ever alert to the safety and well being of the patients, visitors and fellow employees. He/she must also work an areas not adequately lighted, ventilated arid heated areas, work surfaces are not usually even or may be slick or oily, also tight, cramped, hot, cold, wet, dry, and dusty locations. Incumbent may be exposed to moving machinery, subject to sharp edges, and sometimes receiving minor cuts, burns, scrapes, bruises and electrical shocks. Expected to work in areas of loud noises and vibrations from machinery and may be required to climb ladders and work on top of machinery where there is dirt, grease and dampness. He/she wears protective devices, such as, goggles, safety shoes, ear plugs and other safety items as necessary. Must be able to use good judgment and initiative to accomplish this job because most of the time he/she will be working alone in hazardous locations.
