Psychologist Primary Care-Mental Health Integration (PC-MHI)

This co-located, collaborative care (CCC) behavioral health psychologist is administratively aligned within the Mental Health & Behavioral Health Sciences Service, with primary assignment to the Primary Care-Mental Health Integration (PC-MHI) program, located within primary care. The CCC PC-MHI psychologist serves as a member of multidisciplinary primary care teams, and delivers brief, consultation-based services to patients, primary care providers, primary care managers, and allied Patient Alliance Care Team (PACT) members. The incumbent is responsible for assuring adequate identification and treatment of a variety of emotional and mental health challenges. The focus is on general service delivery for a wide range of concerns and resolving problems within the primary care service context. Behavioral health visits are brief (generally 20-30 minutes), limited in number (1-6 visits), and are provided in the primary care practice area, structured so that the patient views meeting with the behavioral health provider as a routine primary care service. The psychologist also manages same-day walk-ins and warm-handoffs from primary care providers, and conducts brief, focused assessments, diagnostics, and evidence-based psychotherapies. The PC-MHI Psychologist also provides on-time, on-target information to Primary Care Providers and collaboratively makes appropriate care decisions. CCC behavioral health providers function within fast-paced primary care teams and can expect to consult with 8-10 patients per day with the primary goals of assisting PACT members with identification, treatment, and management of mental health and behavioral medicine conditions in the enrolled population. The incumbent demonstrates, or is capable of acquiring, the ability to write clear, concise progress notes, generally to 1 page long, with explicit impression, recommendations, and plan for PCP use. Progress notes document curbside consultation outcomes and all notes are completed within 24-hours. Additional duties involve coordination of care with integrated behavioral health co-located staff and the rest of the Primary Care team. The incumbent functions as a treatment advocate and guide, consultant, counselor and educator while providing integrated health care to outpatients in Primary Care. Other skills, and potential duties, include, but are not limited to:
Provides a full range of psychological assessment services and diagnoses mental disorders and behavioral health conditions. Provides education to patients, family members and significant others. Provides comprehensive, evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions, including individual, family and group psychotherapy. Provides consultation to professional staff within the Veteran Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), and to community providers, concerning clinical assessment findings and appropriate treatment plans for patients. Develops, implements, and documents the psychotherapeutic treatment plan for an assigned caseload of patients, including prompt completion of clinical reminders. Functions independently as a member of the VAMC Medical Staff, with full clinical privileges. Assumes complete professional responsibility for his/her clinical assessment findings, patient care decisions and documentation. Assists the Service Line Chief, or designee, in the design, development and implementation of clinical programs for a team of treatment providers. Work Schedule:

Nothing is required beyond the Basic Requirements. This is an Entry Level position. Psychologists at this level diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders, and may conduct research. They may be assigned to any program area. If not licensed, the selectee must practice under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. GS-12 GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
Must have at least 1 full year of post-doctoral degree experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11). This experience includes:
The ability to diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders, and may conduct research. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following GS-12 KSAs:
1) Knowledge of and ability to apply a wide range of professional psychological theories and assessment methods to a variety of patient populations. 2) Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies. 3) Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures. 4) Ability to conduct research activities, such as designing and implementing clinical research projects (staff psychologists with specified research job duties). 5) Ability to perform basic research tasks of scholarship and research execution within the context of an established research team, including research participant relations, research documentation, data acquisition, maintenance, and collaboration. They may be assigned to any program area. If not licensed, the selectee must practice under the supervision of a licensed psychologist but with less intense supervision than at the GS-11 grade level. GS-13 GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
Must have a license to practice independently in the provision of psychological services, consulting with peers and supervisors as appropriate; and at least 2 years of post-doctoral degree experience as a professional psychologist, with at least one year equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12), in the specialty area of the position.
